CONTROLLING THE MASSES : THE NEED TO GET 300,000 VISITORS A DAY TO EXPO 2000 HAS INSPIRED A PIONEERING EXPERIMENT IN ALTERNATING SINGLE- DIRECTION HIGHWAY MANAGEMENT
This article describes efforts in Hannover, Germany, in preparing for the arrival of Expo 2000. Focus is on turning a highway into a reversible one-way route during peak hours. This involves a system which consists of variable message signs, traffic lights, CCTV cameras, gates, and illuminated lane markings.
