MAKING THE FULL USE OF VEHICLE FLEETS : DEMAND RESPONSIVE TRANSPORT SERVICES (DRTS) IN SAMPO PROJECT
This paper gives an overview of the System for Advanced Management of Public Transport Operations ( SAMPO). Focus of the project is to assess the potential and effectiveness of introducing telematics in demand responsive transportation services (DRTS). A brief review is provided of the field demonstration sites in Italy, Sweden, Finland Belgium, and Ireland. It is shown that there are two major factors that can make DRTS viable. These include a travel dispatch center for managing fleets and passenger needs, and flexibility in terms of vehicle characteristics.
