CONTROLLING THE FUTURE
This article gives an overview of vehicle detector applications in urban traffic control and what might be anticipated for in the future in terms of their design. The technologies involved are placed into two categories: subsurface applications and above-ground applications. The advantages and disadvantages are examined for both types. Design issues are discussed, with the goal of achieving cost- effect multiple function, selectable function, and addressable detectors. The author notes that intelligent interactive detectors even though they are indicative of the future direction, are already being used in traffic applications.
