SEALCOATING THE RIGHT WAY
Proper application of sealer to pavement is one of the most important topics to pavement maintenance contractors. In an effort to both upgrade the quality of sealcoating work with their respective products and to develop industry standards for applying sealer to pavement, the Asphalt Sealcoat Manufacturers Association (ASMA) and the Pavement Coatings Technology Center (PCTC) have each developed a set of specifications or guidelines designed to help contractors do a better job for their sealcoating customers. ASMA's specifications are for asphalt emulsion-based sealing material, while PCTC's guidelines are designed for refined coal-tar based sealing material. In this article, some of the sealcoating specifications as developed by the 2 associations are explained. Similarities and differences are highlighted and the essential elements that contractors need to be aware of when applying either material are described.
