USING TECHNOLOGY IN SURFACE TRANSPORTATION TO SAVE LIVES, TIME, AND MONEY
Despite aggressive highway construction and efforts to promote non-highway modes of travel, the U.S. has seen traffic congestion increase to unprecedented levels that threaten to gridlock both commuting and commerce. Many municipalities are now using intelligent transportation systems (ITS) to reduce congestion and improve the efficiency of existing transportation networks. Recent legislation has spurred research in and deployment of ITS, but it is private enterprise that will build on these investments over the next 20 years. This article discusses the efforts of ITS America, a 1,000 member organization dedicated to promoting and deploying ITS nationwide and globally, to use technology to help reduce congestion, decrease surface transportation costs, and increase safety.
