CRITICAL HIGHWAY LINK
This article describes the 40 km Inchon International Expressway including the Yong Jong Grand Bridge in South Korea which is on schedule for completion by the end of 2000. The U.S $2.27 billion expressway will serve as the entrance to both metropolitan Seoul and the Inchon International Airport. As the only connection between the Yong Jong airport island and the mainland, the 550m suspension bridge's progress is critical to the airport program as it will provide vital road access. The expressway spans Seoul harbor's shipping channel and vessels up to 10,000t will be able to pass under the main span of the bridge, 35m above the high tide water level. The Yong Jong bridge ranks as the longest existing self-anchored bridge in the world. Other features and aspects of the Inchon International Expressway/Yong Jong Grand Bridge system are also discussed.
