PTC: THE CURTAIN RISES ON THE NEXT GENERATION
During the last decade, the railroad industry has invested more than $200 million in pursuing the vision of improvements or even fundamental changes to conventional train control systems. The envisioned system, positive train control (PTC), would use the principles of physical train separation and fail-safe operation together with newly available technologies for locating trains and wireless communication of information and instructions for train movement. The article discusses a joint effort between Association of American Railroads, Federal Railroad Administration and the Illinois Department of Transportation to attempt to develop an industry-interoperable and cost effective PTC system.
