DIRECT FLIGHTS ACROSS TAIWAN STRAIT AND THEIR IMPACTS ON EASTERN ASIAN TRANSPORTATION MARKET

Hong Kong has long been successfully playing the role as a gateway to China. According to statistics, some 5 million passengers were traveling on the link between Taipei and Hong Kong in 1997. The paper brings up the possibility of some direct services to China from Taiwan; the air link between Hong Kong and Taipei will the compete with the links across Taiwan Strait. This paper examines the possible changes in the eastern Asian air transportation market. The current market environment, the future role of Hong Kong, and the market structure in the future are discussed.
