MONCTON-FREDERICTON TOLLS END
The New Brunswick government has ended tolls on the four-lane Moncton-Fredericton highway, saving Cdn$34.5 million on the project's Cdn$910.7 million cost. However, the removal of the tolls will cost the government an estimated Cdn$31 million in lost profit over the next 30 years. Put in place by the previous government, the tolls were to service Cdn$150 million in debt. Any monies in excess of the debt charges would be returned to the province; that amount is estimated at Cdn$321 million. On March 1, 2000, the government replaced the tolls with a shadow toll system.
