PURDUE RESEARCHERS STUDY ROAD NOISE
Following the lead of European engineers, Purdue University, in West Lafayette, Indiana, has created the Institute for Safe, Quiet, and Durable Highways. The institute's goal is to analyze roads and find ways to reduce traffic noise. A large obstacle to creating quieter roads is the fact that the friction between tires and asphalt that keeps automobiles from sliding is also responsible for a great deal of the sound produced on highways.
