HISTORIC BRIDGE AWAITS ANCHORAGE REPLACEMENT
The last remaining suspension bridge across the Rio Grande--the 630 ft (192 m) Roma-Ciudad Miguel Aleman International Suspension Bridge--is in desperate need of repair, but funding for the restoration effort must be split between two countries. The U.S. Coast Guard has told officials in the United States and Mexico that the structure, which has been closed since 1978, must be repaired or demolished. Starr County, Texas, and Ciudad Miguel Aleman, Tamaulipas, Mexico, each own half of the bridge.
