SMART CARS OPEN THE WAY FOR SAFER, FASTER TRAVEL
As we enter a new century, there is a radical transportation transformation brewing: the advent of the intelligent vehicle. The early "smart cars" are giving drivers up-to-the-minute transportation information, saving them time, and helping them to drive more safely. Intelligent vehicles are part of a complete intelligent transportation system (ITS) that proponents see evolving to help traffic flow more smoothly and safely. ITS highways will include computerized traffic control devices that coordinate signal lights or time freeway access, railroad crossings that interconnect with street signals, or highway video monitors that quickly alert emergency authorities to crashes. ITS also aims to improve driver access to travel information through public kiosks, private computer terminals, or special telephone numbers so that drivers can pick the safest, quickest routes. At its ultimate, the intelligent vehicle slips into this infrastructure like a hand in a glove. To bring intelligent vehicles to their full potential, thorny communications issues must be straightened out.
