NHTSA MAY OK BROADER VEHICLE SAFETY RATING SYSTEM
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is considering expanding its vehicle safety rating system to include car and utility-vehicle rollovers. This expansion could also involve ratings for brakes and lights that go beyond the current program, which rates vehicles for protection of occupants in frontal and side-impact crash tests. The expanded testing could spell more publicity trouble for the larger vehicles, such as sport utility and pickup trucks, which already are regarded as more prone to rollovers because they are taller and relatively narrower. The new ratings would be part of NHTSA's consumer information effort, which also includes annual model-by-model rundowns on available safety features.
