OSHA ANNOUNCES NEW PLANS FOR PROTECTING PAINTERS, OTHER CONSTRUCTION WORKERS

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) announced at the end of 1999 its plans for several new and revised construction industry standards. OSHA divides its rules into three basic categories: general industry, construction industry, and maritime. Two new rules under consideration for the construction industry would correspond to rules already in existence for general industry in the areas of confined space and control of hazardous energy. Revisions and updates identified on the unified agenda for the construction industry address the areas of occupational exposure to crystalline silica, preventing hearing loss, respiratory protection, and safety standards for scaffolds used in the construction industry. General industry changes include the areas of process safety management of highly hazardous chemicals and spray application.
