UNDERSTANDING HOW TO PROPORTION PLURAL-COMPONENT MATERIALS. APPLICATOR TRAINING BULLETIN
This bulletin introduces one of the most common chemicals used in plural-component spray systems and three ways to mix (proportion) plural-component materials so that they can be applied properly. Isocyanate is a plural-component chemical that is often used as a catalyst. Isocyanate is sensitive to moisture. Moisture from the air will react with the isocyanate and create a plastic film over the top of the material in the container. This plastic film can cause a variety of problems with fluid handling equipment. To prevent the plastic film from developing, a dry air blanket or an inert gas (nitrogen) is supplied over the open container of isocyanate. The advantages and disadvantages of the three methods of proportioning--manual, mechanical, and electronic--are outlined. An upcoming issue will explain the basics of setting up and using plural-component spray equipment.
