THE APPLICATION OF DIGITAL MOBILE TETRA COMMUNICATIONS TO RAILWAY COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS

TErrestrial TRunked RAdio (TETRA) is the new European Standard for professional mobile communication applications, and has been specified to offer new services at a higher performance level than for existing technologies. This paper examines the characteristics of TETRA which make it an excellent mobile communications choice for use in managing and running a safe modern railway network. TETRA facilities and properties include: digital speech quality, support of both speech and data by one terminal, speed of call establishment, manageable service grade, high reliability, a wide variety of data services, point to multi-point calls, direct mode, and high data security. TETRA can deliver telephony services, professional mobile radio services, and three main types of mobile data services. TETRA's 400MHz banding enables it to propagate easily along railway tracks, including short tunnels and cuttings. Its reliability and call-hand-over facility enhance its railway use. Railway applications of TETRA include: (1) train management with driver information and signalling to the cab; (2) communications to maintenance crews for safer working; (3) managing passengers to make them safer on busy platforms; and (4) providing passengers with up-to-the-minute information on possible delays, connection platforms, and special travel offers.
