GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEM FOR MAJOR ROADS: A CASE STUDY OF TIRUCHIRAPALLI

This paper describes the development of a geographical information system (GIS) for the highways around Tiruchirapalli in Tamil Nadir, India. Because of the high cost of acquiring existing GIS software packages, a GIS was developed in the Visual Basic programming language, which is a powerful tool used in the Windows operating system environment. Visual Basic is easy to install and program, can be used to write sophisticated database management applications, and supports Open DataBase Connectivity (ODBC) and Structured Query Language (SQL). This GIS for the highways around Tiruchirapalli (GIS/HAT) incorporates the details of accidents, junctions, bridges, culverts, and traffic information for easy interpretation. GIS/HAT is a desirable tool for planners and administrators, because its data are portable, and because it can include modifications to the existing database. GIS applications include planning, field office support, and road safety. The study area has total area 883 sq km and urban area 571 sq km, and total population 710,000. The paper lists the types of data collected, and describes the following aspects of GIS/HAT: (1) data integration; (2) working with GIS/HAT; and (3) the capabilities of GIS/HAT. It draws several conclusions, including the finding that GIS/HAT is a good demonstration of GIS potential.
