TOUCHING BASE
RAC Trafficmaster Telematics (RTT) was formed in the UK early in 1999, to take advantage of some potential new markets for telematics by creating products and services meeting real customer needs. This article discusses how RTT is meeting the needs of fleet operators at all levels. These companies are looking for a combination of three basic functions: (1) vehicle location ability; (2) ability to communicate with drivers; and (3) ability to analyse the performance of vehicles and drivers. Even though the market for fleet management systems, using telematics, is still in its infancy, RTT's approach is to design modular systems that address different customer needs and satisfy different price points. Typically, its products are aimed at the following market segments: remote vehicle monitoring, reactive tracking, and dynamic tracking. In the near future, remote or off-board diagnostics will add to the benefits of telematics. The ability to extract diagnostic data, especially on the engine management system, from their vehicles will enable operators to manage vehicle performance and anticipate future performance proactively. Despite the two current barriers of cost and employee privacy, the demand for fleet management systems is increasing. RTT offers a unique full end-to-end service for fleet operators.
