SCALE MODEL EXPERIMENT ON SOUND RADIATION FROM A TUNNEL MOUTH
The Acoustical Society of Japan has published a new road trafflc noise prediction model (ASJ Model 1998) this year, in which noise propagation from various kinds of road structures are modeled. Among them, a simplified model of the calculation of sound radiation from a tunnel mouth is included. To make this model, theoretical studies based on geometrical acoustics, field measurements and 1/40 scale model experiment were performed. In this paper, the result of the scale model study is reported. In this experiment, a spark discharge impulse source was used and the sound energy radiated from the mouth of a model tunnel was measured for discrete sound source positions in the tunnel. From the experimental results, the method of predicting the total sound power generated from the tunnel mouth was investigated. In addition, the directive characteristic of the sound radiation was also measured. These measurements were performed under different acoustical conditions of the interior surface of the tunnel.
