SOUND QUALITY ANALYSIS OF ARTIFICIAL SOUNDS GENERATED BY THE AUTOMOBILE INTERIOR'S SOUND SIMULATOR

The performance of a car engine is the most important for drivers, but recently, many people have begun to demand not only performance of the engine but also pleasantness of driviilg. Therefore, it is important to design pleasant sounds dependent on the car types. However, it is very expensive and time consuming to construct test cars for sound design. Then a sound simulator is useful for sound design. For this reason, we developed a sound simulator, DL-1000, which is very useful for sound design of cars. The DL-1000 is a new sound simulator that can synthesize sounds of a car according to its running speeds. It requires only recorded car sounds and r/min pulses to synthesise sounds. Besides a simulator, an analyzer of the sound quality is also necessary to evaluate the quality of a sound. The SQ-6600 is a sound quality analyzer which calculates sound quality parameters based on psycoacoustics (loudness, sharpness, fluctuation strength, and roughness) and physical parameters (FFT spectrum etc.). In this paper, a sound design system, which was made by combining the new sound simulator and a sound quality analyzer, is introduced. The car sounds were synthesized using the sound simulator and analyzed using the sound quality analyzer. The results show that synthesized sounds were in good agreement with the original sounds. Also, the sound quality parameters coincided with the hearing results. This system is useful for sound design of cars. For the covering abstract see IRRD E104312.
