This work forms part of the Finnish Road Structures Research Programme (TPPT) started in 1994, financed by the Finnish Road Administration (Finnra), which involved test constructions carried out under a variety of conditions to study bearing capacity and frost resistance of road structures. The aim of the work performed in 1998 was to identify essential quality factors affecting the behaviour of bearing capacity and frost heave in road structures. The results of quality control measurements and other documents related to the construction work were used to examine the significance of quality for the behaviour of road structures. The thickness and stiffness of the bound course have the most pronounced effect on bearing capacity. The effects of variations in the thickness of the asphalt concrete were studied by a modern georadar measuring technique in the context of routine paving work.
