CHILDREN : A CRITICAL LINK FOR CHANGING DRIVING BEHAVIOUR
This paper was presented at the 'Environmental management planning for sustainable transportation' session. Recommendations for public education and outreach are integral to most reports regarding sustainable transportation. Moving from recommendations to action, and specifically influencing behaviour in the direction of sustainable transportation is critical. Children are proving to be a critical link to changing driver behaviour. The work of Doug McKenzie-Mohr in the area of community based social marketing is discussed with reference to public outreach strategies and existing programs that focus on children and driver behaviour. The impacts of cars on children are presented to reinforce the perspective that strategic investments and planning for sustainable transportation must extend beyond technology change.
