TYPICAL SKID RESISTANCE VALUES OF SURFACINGS IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA

The report evaluates the friction resistance of various surfacings used by the Department both in the asphalt and sprayed seals areas of road surfacing. A GripTester (friction testing device) was used in the evaluation process. The following conclusions and recommendations were made: use the GripTester for all Departmental road surface friction assessment work; the GripTester will significantly increase the output of road surface friction evaluation work, and do so more economically; address the Departmental requirements regarding recommended road surface friction intervention levels; confirm the benefits of the PIARC approach to road surface friction evaluation and presentation using the IFI (International Friction Index); upgrade the two laser profilometers to also undertake texture measurements, and so improve the accuracy of road surface friction evaluation; develop an automated test and reporting system for road surface friction evaluation (skid and texture); continue testing of surfaces already assessed and evaluate sites from new.
