ASPHALT INTERSECTIONS: MATERIALS, DESIGN, AND CONSTRUCTION
Recognizing that there is a need to apply an intersection strategy using proper materials selection, mix design, and construction techniques is critical to obtaining the improved performance of pavements subject to high-shear loading. This article discusses techniques to be employed that will ensure improved performance in asphalt intersections. Specific areas of focus are binder grade and selection; stiffness of the binder; and density- and durability-oriented construction that avoids segregation, assures dense joints, and produces an impermeable mat. The most important aspects of intersection contracting revolve around taking the time and effort to ensure that the job is done correctly, even though the unit cost of paving an intersection is higher than for conventional applications.
