WAYS TO PROTECT CREWS IN MOBILE WORK ZONES
This article discusses a new booklet entitled, "Work-Zone Safety: Guidelines for Construction, Maintenance, and Utility Operations," published by the Transportation Information Center at the University of Wisconsin and the Wisconsin Dept. of Transportation. This booklet shows how to lay out traffic control for work zones in a variety of common situations and emphasizes short-term work sites, providing explicit guidelines for mobile operations. It also provides guidance for short duration operations which can last up to 1 hour. More than 30 readable diagrams show work-zone signing and set-up for shoulder work, lane closures, and intersection projects for various traffic speeds and highway types. For mobile situations, the booklet lists 4 basic diagrams for: shoulder work on a 2-lane road, lane work on a 2-lane road, using flaggers on a 2-lane road, and lane work on a multi-lane road.
