RURAL TRANSPORTATION PLANNING PROCESS FOCUS OF USDOT STUDY
This article discusses a provision of the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA-21). This provision calls for a study of local official involvement in non-metropolitan/rural statewide transportation planning and directs the Secretary of the U.S. Dept. of Transportation (DOT) to submit this study to Congress by June 9, 2000. TEA-21 also directs the Secretary of the U.S. DOT to consider the degree of cooperation between each state and local officials and organizations in rural areas in the state and to make any recommendations deemed appropriate based on the study's results. The study's progress, including those federal agencies and non-profit organizations involved in putting the study elements together, is described.
