WATERWAYS MANAGEMENT RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT
The recent U.S. Dept. of Transportation Marine Transportation System (MTS) initiative has highlighted the need for a safe, efficient, and environmentally sound waterway system. The U.S. Coast Guard Research and Development (R&D) Center is actively engaged in a number of research projects aimed at improving the Coast Guard's ability to manage the nation's waterways. Current efforts include research and development of advanced navigation information technology and decision support tools, as well as projects in the area of risk analysis. The focus of the article is on those initiatives that will enhance Coast Guard efforts in the area of waterways management. Several specific research programs currently underway, such as the Automatic Identification System (AIS), are described in detail.
