VESSEL TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT: A NEW PHILOSOPHY
This article describes various initiatives by the U.S. Coast Guard Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) to aid in safer and more efficient vessel traffic management. Some of these efforts include: the establishment of the Ports and Waterways Safety System (PAWSS) to address waterway user needs and environmental issues; encourage the use and implementation of the automatic identification system (AIS) to enable the efficient exchange of data among ships and between shore stations and ships; and increase the use of the Port Operations Information for Safety and Efficiency (POISE) Web site. POISE links users with specific port and maritime related information across the nation and provides real-time weather, current, and tide information for numerous waterways throughout the U.S.
