EXTERNAL CHALLENGES FACING CANADIAN PORTS. THE CASE FOR REFORM
This paper focuses on the significant forces within the external environment in which Canadian ports operate. Four major forces are considered: international trade and economic globalization, North American continentalism (including the growth of inter-port competition), changing transportation technology, and transportation deregulation and reform. These economic forces affect Canadian ports and partly drive contemporary port reform.
