PLANNING FOR FUTURE HEAVY-HAUL DEMANDS ON SPECIAL TRACK WORK
Special track work plays a vital role in providing a smoothly operating railroad network. This article discusses a research program with an aim to help the industry prepare for the demand of heavy haul service on special track work. The program's two major objectives are: to develop designs and materials that are better able to withstand the static and dynamic loading of today's and tomorrow's traffic, and, to develop designs and maintenance procedures that are able to reduce the dynamic loading of today's and tomorrow's traffic.
