THE SIGNIFICANCE OF RAIL IN BUILDING COMPETITIVE AND EFFECTIVE URBAN PUBLIC TRANSPORT SYSTEMS: AN INTERNATIONAL PERSPECTIVE
With increasing attention being paid to sustainability issues, most cities are making efforts to restrain the growth in automobile dependence. This paper explores a wide range of transportation, economic, and environmental features in cities that have significant urban rail systems compared to those cities which do not. An argument is made that a rail system is an essential factor in developing a strong backbone for a public transit system that results in a host of advantages to cities that can not be achieved with buses alone.
