ASIAN HIGHWAYS AND RURAL ROADS AND DEVELOPMENT
The report seeks to explore the roles of secondary rural roads in a nation's economic and social development and the sustainable management of such road networks. The principal context in which these roles are explored is the Asian region; however, it is expected that the conclusions will have a far wider application. The objectives sought are: identification of the variety of roles that secondary rural roads play in the economic and social development in the region; stimulation of strategic consideration of the balances between competing priorities; illustration of a range of experiences through case studies; definition of the key issues requiring resolution in the near and medium term future; and, exploration of the potential role of international organizations in helping to meet those needs.
