PUTTING SAFETY FIRST: LIGHTING FOR NIGHTTIME SAFETY
Conti Construction Company partnered with the New Jersey Department of Transportation in the development of a new lighting specification for work zones. Consultants from General Electric helped design the hydraulically operated lighting system for pavers, which allows four 150-watt "stadium lights" to be moved up and down and the lighting angles to be changed as needed. Diffusers were added to cut glare. The pavers also have 300-watt side lights and auger lights. The cost of improved equipment lighting is more than offset by the improved construction quality made possible by better illumination of the worksite.
