USING MODIFIERS WITH SUPERPAVE BINDERS: NEW TESTS AND PROCEDURES PROPOSED
After more than 3 years of research, proposals are emerging for new tests and procedures for refining the Superpave system for use with modifiers. New tests are recommended for storage stability and particulate additives. The research team also has developed a proposal for performance grading of modified binders. The proposed system will determine whether the binders are simple or complex. The proposed changes to the performance-graded binder grading system will consider the effect of temperature and load on performance, which varies for different modifiers. Pavement structure, which has an important impact on pavement performance, will also be considered for the first time. The interim proposals are being evaluated by the asphalt industry.
