STRENGTHENING OF REINFORCED CONCRETE BEAMS WITH EXTERNALLY BONDED COMPOSITE LAMINATES. DISCUSSIONS

Three discussions of a paper with the aforementioned title by C.A. Ross, D.M. Jerome, J.W. Tedesco, and M.L. Hughes, published in this journal (Volume 96, Number 2, March-April 1999), are presented. The first two discussers conducted an analytical study to compare their results with those presented in the paper. The authors suggested that implementing the anchorage system to the plate might be necessary to preclude plate separation and develop the full capacity of the fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) plate. However, the discussers' research does not confirm those opinions. From computer calculations by the discussers, it appears that full strength of the plate can be reached when the plate is prestressed earlier. The second discussion attempts to shed some light on several aspects of load displacement predictions. The final discusser disagrees with the authors' conclusion that for more heavily reinforced beams, comparable strength enhancement requires increased amount of FRP or a comparable composite ratio. Rather, this discusser maintains that it has been shown experimentally that the more FRP added to the beams, the higher the likelihood of early shear failure. This, then, is another failure mode shown to restrain the full utilization of the enhanced flexural capacity provided by thicker FRP plates.
