MAR SIN BARRERAS GAINS AWARD FOR PUERTO RICO

A task force in Puerto Rico has designed a barrier-free facility that allows disabled Puerto Ricans to enjoy a visit to the beach. It covers more than 7 waterfront acres (3 ha), including a beach recreation area, a system of ramps and oceanside platforms, specially designed wheelchairs that allow water contact, and a playground for the physically challenged. The state was able to obtain federal funds to build the site as a transportation enhancement project in coordination with the Federal Highway Administration.
