GPS AS A DATA COLLECTION METHOD FOR TRAVEL RESEARCH : THE USE OF GPS FOR DATA COLLECTION FOR ALL MODES OF TRAVEL

The technology of Global Positioning Systems (GPS) provides new ways of collecting information about travel behavior. When used in combination with an electronic travel diary, valuable information of high quality about travel behavior becomes available. In order to learn about the possibilities of this new technology, a pilot study was performed in the Netherlands in which 151 persons participated. What makes this pilot unique is the monitoring of all modes of travel rather than just travel by motorised vehicles. The findings suggest that, although it is possible to monitor all travel modes, data quality differs among them
