HIGH TECH AND LOW : BRIGHT IDEAS IN TRANSPORTATION
In this paper, the author first gives an overview of four promising technologies and why they never really took off. These include: dial-a-ride, personal rapid transit (PRT), ride-sharing and congestion pricing. A discussion of projects that succeeded include light rail, the four-step travel demand model, and geographic information systems. The author then focuses on upcoming projects that hold the potential to succeed. These include: value pricing large-scale modeling initiatives, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), and traffic calming.
