THE NEW PARTS 2 OF EUROCODE 3 AND EUROCODE 4 - DESIGN RULES FOR STEEL AND COMPOSITE BRIDGES

The new parts 2 of Eurocode 3 and Eurocode 4 give unified European design rules for steel and composite bridges. These parts have been published by CEN as F-NV 1993-2 and ENV 1994-2 for test application together with national application documents (NAD's). Also Eurocode-rules for traffic loads on bridges, wind loads and loads from temperature actions, accidental loads and loads from bridge construction are available in ENV 1991-paiU 2 and 3. Particular features of the new European design rules for bridges are relatively high characteristic loads from traffic in combination with low partial load factors and a common treatment of fatigue both for road- and railway-bridges, a new procedure for the choice of material to avoid brittle fracture that it permits rather thick plates if the toughness properties are appropriate as well as new rules for plate buckling that help to reduce the number of stiffeners. For composite bridges the effects of controlled cracking of the dock slab can be easily taken into account. (A) For the covering abstract see IRRD E104254.
