EFFECT OF POZZOLAN MODIFIER ON BITUMINOUS MIXTURES PROPERTIES

The paper presents a study of the effect of amounts of pozzolan added to asphalt cement on the properties of asphalt-pozzolan binder and binder-concrete mixture. The materials used were: 80/100 penetration asphalt cement, aggregate limestone and valley gravel, and pozzolan with specific gravity 2.16 and surface area 253m2/kg. To evaluate the effect of pozzolan on binder properties, asphalt-pozzolan binders were prepared with pozzolan contents 0%, 2%, 4%, 6%, and 8% by weight of binder, and evaluated in terms of the binder's specific gravity, flash point, softening point, and penetration. To evaluate the effect of pozzolan content on the properties of bituminous mixtures, Marshall specimens were prepared with pozzolan contents of 0%, 2%, 4%, 6%, and 8% by weight of binder. The effect of pozzolan on the behaviour of these specimens was evaluated in terms of optimal asphalt content, rutting resistance (stability), unit weight, air voids, voids in mineral aggregate, and water sensitivity of pozzolan-asphalt mixes (stripping potential). These properties were evaluated for mixes with each of the two types of aggregates used; the performance of limestone mixes was usually better than that of valley gravel mixes.
