ROADSIDE PLANTING

WEGBEPLANTINGEN

After an introductory section in which the importance of roadside planting within the overall context of Holland's trees is more particularly noted, the demands made by trees and shrubs upon their growing conditions are dealt with. The third chapter is concerned with the importance of roads and roadside planting in the past and at the present time. The many aspects associated with planting on roads are dealt with in detail in the latter part of this chapter. In the fourth chapter the relations between roadside planting and road safety receive a good deal of attention, while the investigation of the part played by psychological and physiological factors in this respect is also fully described. The next chapter is devoted to the effects that traffic and measures for the benefit of traffic may have on existing roadside planting. Conversely, the effect of roadside planting on the relations between the traffic on the road and the surroundings of the road is also discussed. The next two chapters are of a more technical character. They deal in greater detail with the planting of trees and shrubs along newly constructed roads and with existing trees and shrubs along roads that are to be reconstructed. In the latter case attention is more particularly drawn to the need for, and the possibilities of, saving valuable existing trees. These points are further considered in the eighth chapter. Finally, in the ninth chapter, the maintenance of roadside trees and shrubs is dealt with. The care that they require as well as the measures to be applied in the event of damage or poor condition are described. (A) /TRRL/
