CROSSING THE ANDES: INTERNATIONAL RAILWAY INTEGRATION IN SOUTH AMERICA
Four proposed or current railway crossings of the Andes Mountains in South America are described and evaluated. Each crossing is part of a larger scheme for the intermodal transport of freight and for the transport of bulk commodities to ports on the Pacific Ocean. The crossings are: the Interconnection (from Brazil to Chile via Bolivia), the Socompa Pass Railway (from Salta in northern Argentina to Antofagasta in Chile), the Central Transandine Railway (from Mendoza, Argentina to Santiago, Chile), and the Southern Transandine Railway (from Zapala, Argentina to Loquimay, Chile). The routes, potential freight, construction costs, financing, and benefits of each scheme are discussed. For the covering abstract see ITRD E117504.
