FUNDING FOR TRANSPORT IN SOUTH EAST QUEENSLAND: A LOCAL GOVERNMENT PERSPECTIVE

To cater for the expected travel demands within Brisbane (a 30 percent increase in vehicle trips, and total vehicle kilometres increasing by 41 percent), Brisbane City Council has released a draft transport plan that defines $16.6 billion expenditure on the city's transport system over the next 15 years. Due to competing priorities for existing government funding, new revenues will need to be generated, to avoid a situation in which congestion will be worse than Sydney or Melbourne; a scenario which has been forecast by the BTE if only minor actions were taken to address this growth. These revenues include: increasing user charges from transport activity, partnering with the private sector, applying taxes/levies related to using the private vehicle, and gaining a greater share of the Commonwealth Government's transport-related revenue.
