THE PHYSICS OF TRAFFIC

Over the past 50 years, researchers have developed a wide range of different mathematical models of traffic flow to attempt to answer, among other questions, whether traffic phenomena can be considered as part of statistical or nonlinear physics in terms of self-organizational and pattern formation behavior. With this question in mind, this paper discusses the development of a new route guidance system for individual vehicles and optimization of traffic flow over road networks based on the physics of traffic.
