FILTRATION IN PLACE OF CENTRIFUGING FOR SHIPBOARD OIL PURIFICATION SERVICES
Whole filtration of fuel and lube oils is proving itself to be of value to some shipowners because the filter units are easier to maintain than centrifuges. One such unit is the A/S Atlas FTU-300 which can purify 2.5 cubic meters per hour of heavy oil. The unit consists of a pressurized filter assembly between the settling tank and the day tank that is connected to a back flushing system and an integral deposits settling tank. The filter cloth is effective down to 30 microns and removes water down to 0.1 or 0.2%. The CJC type filter is claimed to remove impurities down to 1 micron. This type filter is used for lube oil and its retention is as effective as by a centrifuge. Inorganic acids are retained as well.
