CAPACITY TESTS AND ASPHALT PROPERTY DETERMINATIONS OF HOT MIX ROAD BASE LAYERS AND SANDWICH CONSTRUCTION

BAERDLAGSFORSOG VED RADSTED. ASFALTBAERELAG OG SANDWICHBELAEGNINGEV

With an interval of 16 years, the National Road Laboratory of Denmark has conducted bearing capacity tests and asphalt property determinations on a test section composed of several stretches having thick hot mix roadbase layers and sandwich constructions. These tests indicate that the pavement materials are better utilized with single-layer hot mix construction than with sandwich construction consisting of two separated asphalt-bound layers. The asphalt bound materials in the test section are very rich in sand sizes, a composition called "hot sand". The laboratory investigation of the hot mix roadbase in the various stretches has indicated an appreciable degree of traffic associated compaction as well as bitumen hardening and leaching of the high void ratio asphalt layers encontered. Two asphalt-bound layers having lower void ratios, corresponding to a good, dense "GAB I" (high quality standard Danish hot mix) and an asphalt concrete mix, showed correspondingly lower values of hardening and leaching.
