PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT OF PORT FACILITIES
To better compete with advanced trucking, rail and air operations during the past few decades, the shipping industry has introduced such technological advances as increased ship size and containerization of break bulk cargos. Most ports, however, have not been able to keep pace with these advances. This paper cites improvements in areas of port planning, facility design and cargo handling which allow better usage of port land and surrounding areas, a better awareness of the port's physical and social environment and methods of obtaining more rapid ship turnaround. One of the chief aims of advanced port planning technology is to effect improved coordination between the different modes of transportation. In this regard a case study of the Port of Galveston, Texas, concentrating on new concepts of facility design, illustrates how improved planning can reduce congestion and increase the efficiency of a port.
