STRATEGIES FOR MARINE POLLUTION MONITORING
Methods of analysis of organic marine environmental pollutants are described and include procedures for petroleum hydrocarbons, PCB and DDT compounds, low molecular wt hydrocarbons, phthalates, chlorinated hydrocarbons, plastics, pelagic tars, and other litter. Neutron activation analysis, atomic absorption spectrophotometric methods, and assay of Pu isotopes by alpha spectrometry are described. Analytical aids discussed include heavy metals calibration standards, handling of seawater samples, interlaboratory analyses of references, and separation and concentration of seawater constituents on synthetic ion- exchange resins. Discussions of sampling sites, organisms selected for monitoring, and transport paths are included.
