OIL POLLUTION. CAUSES AND CURES

Studies carried out in the United Kingdom, following the Torrey Canyon incident, are discussed. Methods for dealing with oil pollution are discussed, namely salvage, burning in situ, burnup on the sea, natural degradation absorbers and gels, dispersants, and mechanical devices. Beach cleaning, and the use of booms to contain spills and protect coastlines, is described.
