The objective of limit state design is to provide a general unified approach to all structural design. This approach is intended to ensure an acceptable expectation that the limit states associated with serviceability and safety will not be exceeded under possible erection or service conditions. Attention is deliberately directed to all possible critical points of behaviour. The format is designed to encourage the use of probalistic methods where sufficient statistical information is available. But it also expressly allows for the retention of presently accepted values pending the collection and evaluation of statistical data on loadings, material properties, structural response and effects of inability to meet specified serviceability and overload conditions.
